President-elect Donald Trump gives election victory speech

The speech came shortly after Clinton campaign manager John Podesta told a shell-shocked crowd at Manhattan’s Javits Center to go home and get some sleep. As the election results rolled in Tuesday evening and into the early hours of Wednesday, the path to victory for Clinton became increasingly narrow and unlikely, setting up Trump for a historic upset.Trump supporters at his invite-only party perked up considerably as the evening wore on. At points, they chanted, “Lock her up!” After being introduced by Vice President-elect Mike Pence, Trump took the stage, flanked by his immediate family members.
“It’s time for us to come together as one united people,” the Republican said, calling on those who didn’t support him (“and there were a few big ones”) to help “unify our great country.”
“Ours was not a campaign but rather an incredible and great movement,” he said.
President-elect Trump laid out in the speech – for which he used a teleprompter – his vision to “fix our inner cities,” address infrastructure issues and “finally” support veterans. “We expect to have great, great relationships” with the rest of the world, he added.
“We must reclaim our nation’s destiny,” he said, noting that when it comes to relations with other nations, “we will seek common ground, not hostility.”Trump also congratulated Clinton on her campaign, saying she “fought very tough.” And he thanked his family, his supporters – including Ben Carson and Reince Priebus – and the Secret Service.
After some number of years, “hopefully you’ll be so proud of your president – you’ll be so proud,” he said.“I. Love. This. Country,” he finished. Read Trump’s acceptance speech below. (Transcript via Vox.)
Thank you. Thank you very much, everyone. Sorry to keep you waiting. Complicated business, complicated. Thank you very much.I’ve just received a call from Secretary Clinton. She congratulated us. It’s about us. On our victory, and I congratulated her and her family on a very, very hard-fought campaign.
